Why Is Your Water Pressure So Low?

Nothing ruins a morning like a weak shower. Low water pressure is a very common problem for homeowners. It is easy to blame the city water supply, but the real issue is often inside your own house. We have broken down the causes into four simple groups. Here is why your water might be slow and when to call Vancouver Plumbing Services.

Inside Your Pipes (Internal Issues)

Focus: Problems with the pipes inside your home.

Over time, your plumbing gets old. In older homes, the biggest problem is often mineral buildup. If you have hard water, minerals can stick to the inside of your pipes. This makes the opening smaller, like a clogged straw, so less water can get through.

Rust is another big cause. Even if pipes look good on the outside, they can be rusty on the inside. Flakes of rust can block the water flow.

Also, check for hidden leaks. If your pressure drops, water might be leaking out before it reaches your sink. If you hear water running when everything is turned off, or see wet spots on the wall, you might have a leak. This needs fixing right away.

Valves and Controls (The “Control” Factors)

Focus: The parts that turn water on and off.

Before checking your pipes, check the valves. There are two main ones:

  1. The Main Shut-off Valve: This is usually in the basement or garage. If someone fixed a pipe recently, they might not have opened this valve all the way. Even if it is partly closed, it slows down your water.
  2. The Water Meter Valve: This is like the main valve, but it belongs to the city or utility company. It must be fully open too.

The most common broken part is the Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV). This valve lowers the strong city water pressure to a safe level for your house. If it breaks, it can stop the water flow. Fixing this is a precise job. Vancouver Plumbing Services can replace it safely.

Outside Problems (City & Neighborhood)

Focus: Issues not in your house.

Sometimes, the problem is not your house. City water work, like fixing a main pipe or flushing hydrants, can lower your pressure for a short time. If your neighbors have the same problem, it is likely a city issue.

It could also be peak usage. In busy neighborhoods, pressure can drop in the morning (7:00 AM – 9:00 AM) when everyone takes a shower at the same time. Also, if you share water lines with neighbors (like in a townhouse), your pressure depends on how much water they use.

Too Many Appliances at Once (The “Load” Factors)

Focus: Using too much water at the same time.

If pressure is only low sometimes, look at how you use water. Using too much at once happens when you run the dishwasher, washing machine, and shower at the same time. Most home pipes cannot handle three big appliances at once.

If only your hot water is slow, the problem is likely your water heater. Sediment can build up in the tank, or a valve might be partly closed. This blocks hot water but leaves cold water flowing fine.

When to Call a Pro

Finding the cause of low pressure can be tricky. You can easily clean a faucet screen yourself. But rusty pipes, broken valves, or hidden leaks need a pro.

If you are tired of weak showers, Vancouver Plumbing Services can help. We don’t guess. We test your pressure, check your valves, and find exactly where the blockage is.
